This April marks the centennial of the beginning of the Armenian Genocide. Our monthly reading list includes a selection of books, dissertations, and articles in English pertaining to the history of Ottoman Armenians before, during, and after the First World War. Works about other Christian communities in Eastern Anatolia and the Middle East are also included. We hope this list will provide a useful starting point for those interested in the history of Ottoman Armenians, and we encourage readers to offer their own suggestions by sending links to books, articles, and dissertations from worldcat.org.
In addition to this reading list, we would like to draw attention the exciting web project called houshamadyan, which features a multimedia space for sharing images and other material related to the life of Ottoman Armenians. This project should be of interest not only for those who study the history of Ottoman Armenians but also for anyone interested in the life of town and country in Ottoman Anatolia. The houshamadyan website takes its name from an incredible genre of books called "houshamadyan" or "memory books," written primarily by Armenians in the diaspora. The houshamadyan site has furnished a great reading list of these books, most of which are composed in Armenian, which are a fantastic starting point was understanding how the generation of Armenians expelled from Anatolia sought to commemorate their villages and life there.
